Abstract

Structural control is one of the hotpost in the area of structural engineeringresearch. Among various control approach AMD (Active Mass Damper) is a typicalactive technology. AMD has very good performance but is not suitable for practicaluseage because of its weakness in complexity, statality, energy cost and economicissues. MRFD (Magneto Rheological Damper,) is the most widely used semi-activecontrol methods. It has exceptble performance with reasonable cost but still can notmeet the needs of extream performance requirement. This paper carried outsimulations on these two methods under180sec wind excitation on the76-storyBenchmark platform. Their performances are evaluated through simulations. Inorderto build a hybrid control system of AMD and MRFD, a few modifications were madeon the original control algorithm of these methods. First, a Skyhook-based simi activealgorithm for distributed MRFD system is established for beter rubstness. Second, modified LQR algorithm is established to run a lite-dety designed AMD device, which allows the light-duty AMD to work at a relatively long drift distance and highdrift speed, as well as reducing the maxmun control foce U. Through thesemodifications, the hybrid control system with distributed MRFD and light-duty AMDis proposed. To evaluate the performance of the newly proposed hybrid controlsystem, a series of Benchmark simulations was carried out wirh180sec windexcitations. The result proved the validity of the hybrid system. It was indicated in thesimulation result that the hybrid system works better than regular MRFD, and hasalmost the same performance of witch of AMD. This research goes further with theworking status and output characteristicsissues, and discussed the way two controlmethods compensate with each other. Further more, this paper diccusded the futuredevelopment of hybrid control techniques for building structures.
