Environment information of crop growth such as soil temperature, soil humidity, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration, air temperature and air humidity are closed linked with nutrient uptake, pest control, etc. It is of importance for agricultural management and research to acquire crop growth environment information.There are many shortcomings with current method of environmental information collecting, such as less flexibility and scalability, and few monitoring parameters and sites. They cannot meet the requirements of modern agriculture. So a monitoring system is developed with ZigBee network, GPRS and configuration software. This system has the function of data collecting, data processing, data analysis, and remote access. It realizes six kinds of environment information monitoring in several sites.The main research contents are as follow:1. A node in the network acts as a coordinator to establish the network, and then works as a router. Other nodes stay the same roles all the time during the system working time. Collected data are transmitted to IP MODEM by way of transparent transmission and reach PC by GPRS and port mapping.2. Monitoring platform development. Monitoring platform is developed on the Kingview with graphic language, command language and C language. It realizes the monitoring function of the system.3. Testing and analysis of ZigBee network parameters and the function of the monitoring system. The maximum theoretical communication distance of two ZigBee nodes is1691.99m. The actual communication distance is tested on rainy day and sunny day, which are1680m and1520m with7.09%and10.17%error. The packet loss rate within theoretical communication range is analyzed on rainy day and sunny day. The best outdoor protective box installation height in sugar cane is determined by analyzing RSSI, which is2.8m. The function of monitoring system is tested and analyzed after the system is developed. The test results show that this system works as designed.
