The overarching objective of this thesis is to investigate the formula of Zhulinsi Nvke using computer and statistical methods. The thesis consists of three parts.1. Literature review. This part introduces the theory of female physiopathology in Tradictonal Chinese Medicine, the background of Buddhism medicine, and previous studies in Zhulinsi Nvke.2. Literature study.First of all, this part introduces the construction of database, data pre-processing, and several statistical methods. The database is constructed through the Microsoft office Excel2007software system, and data are processed using Matlab and NodeXL software.Secondly, the basic statistical information of the data is calculated through Matlab. Totally, the database includes943formulaes, which can be divided into pregnancy disease (357), postpartum disease (272), menstrual disease (202), intrapartum disease (34), leukorrhagia (16), and others (62). The943formulaes are dominated by those of internal use (927), with only16formulaes for external use. Among the927formulaes for internal use, decoction (548), powder (221), pill (146), and others (12) are identified. The943formulaes have a mean of8herbs per formulae, and involve132diseases,385herbs,254symptoms and50syndrome factors. Frequency is calculated for the symptom, syndrome factor, herb, property, taste, and meridian. Association between herbs is also explored through association rule analysis, obtaining two-, three-and four-herb association rules of15,40, and7, respectively. Based on these extensive analyses, the underlying rule of formulae from Zhulinsi Nvke is summarized.Thirdly, herbs and syndrome factors with high frequency are further investigated through a comparison between pregnancy, postpartum and menstrual diseases. Comparison results show that qi and blood are the key of the treatment of gynecopathy in Zhulinsi Nvke, with an emphasis on spleen and stomach. The treatment of postpartum disease is mainly through warming qi and blood, protecting spleen and lung, and dispeling phlegm and wind. The therapy of pregnancy disease concentrates on nourishing qi, blood, spleen and liver. The therapy also clears heat, dispels phlegm, and conducts qi. The treatment of menstrual diseases focuses on tonifying and invigorating blood, promoting the movement of qi, supplying spleen, soothing the liver and clearing heat. Postpartum disease mainly originates from weakness in qi and blood, and stagnation in blood. Additionally, deficiency in lung and spleen can be caused by cold and stagnation of qi. In pregnancy disease, deficiency of qi is more common than that of blood, and heat mainly originates from Yangpiankang due to negative deficiency in blood. In addition, qi stagnation in liver, spleen and stomach, and deficiency in spleen and kidney, is commonly found in pregnancy disease. Menstrual disease is majorly caused by deficiency in qi and blood, probably due to weakness in spleen and stomach, and biochemical deficiency in source. Menstrual disease can also stem from qi stagnation in liver, blockage in blood, and heat in blood.Fourthly, correlation analysis was applied to the herb for postpartum disease, obtaining19,36, and24associated rules for two, three, and four herbs, respectively. Among these herbs,47formulae are identified as the serie of Shenghua Decoction based on the symptom with high frequency in postpartum. The relationships between Shenghua Decoction, herbs and symptoms are also explored. Finally, the theory of Taichanxinshu is comprehensively discussed, including attention to the spleen and stomach, qi and blood, menstrual disease, pregnancy health care and prevwention, Shenghua Decoction and postpartum disease, childbirth and postpartum care and herbs research.3. Conclusion. The formulae regulation and clinical features of Zhulinsi Nvke are sumarried. The limitations of this thesis are also acknowledged.
