Abstract


【Objective】 The aim of the study was to evaluate the attachment styles and thelever of the differentiation of self in outpatients with anxiety disorders and to testtheir relationships.【Methods】 A total of123outpatients with anxiety disorders and120healthycontrols were diagnosed based on the Chinese version of the InternationalNeuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and assessed using the Experiences CloseRelationships Inventory Revised edition (ECR-R), the Differentiation of SelfInventory Revised edition (DSI-R) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).【Results】①Patients’ scores in the ECR-R anxiety and avoidance and STAI werehigher than the controls, but lower in DSI-R total, DSI-R Emotional Reactivity and IPosition.②The insecure styles of ECR-R in patients was57%, in which preoccupiedstyle was18.4%, dismissing style was24.6%and fearful style was14%. Insecurestyle had4.88times of the risk of the anxiety disorders, fearful style had the highestrisk(15.02times), preoccupied style had4.38times and dismissing style had3.76times.③In patients, the occupied and fearful attachment styles had higher scores thanthose of the secure and dismiss attachment styles in DSI-R total and EmotionalReactivity. The occupied style’s scores were the lowest in DSI-R Emotional Cutoffdimension while the fearful style’s scores were the highest in TAI.④Compared withthe patients with secure attachment style, the scores of the controls with secureattachment style were higher in DSI-R total and Emotional Reactivity dimension and lower in STAI. Compared with the patients with insecure attachment style, the scoresof the patients with secure attachment style were higher in DSI-R total、EmotionalReactivity、Emotional Cutoff dimension and lower in STAI.⑤In patients, there was anegative correlation between scores in DSI-R total、four dimensions and scores inECR-R anxiety.⑥In patients, multiple linear regression analyses revealed that scoresin ECR-R anxiety could predict41%of the score in DSI-R total and29%of thescores in ECR-R Emotional Cutoff. And the scores in ECR-R anxiety and avoidancecould predict36%of the scores in DSI-R Emotional Reactivity together.【Conclusion】Compared with the controls, the attachment styles of the patientswith anxiety disorder were insecure majority, and the level of differentiation of self ofthem were lower while the level of the anxiety were higher. Compared with thepatients with secure and dismiss attachment styles, the patients with occupiedand fearful attachment styles have low level differentiation of self and high level ofanxiety. The level of the differentiation of self of the patients with secure attachmentstyle is lower than it of the controls with secure attachment style and higher than it ofthe patients with insecure attachment styles, while its level of anxiety is in the middleof these two groups. The anxiety dimension of adult attachment in patients negativelycorrelated to the differentiation of self.
