Abstract


Literary aesthetic view is reader’s view about literary works from the point of aesthetics. and it is one of the most important factors that influence the translation of Chinese ancient poetry. Due to different geographical, historical, cultural factors and son on. Chinese and westerners formed different literary aesthetic views, which enables readers have different aesthetic understanding and enjoyment about the same poetry work. However. translators would always ignore this difference in the process of poetry translation, finally causing inferior aesthetic effect between translated text and the original one. namely the so called "aesthetic loss". Aesthetic loss has a great impact on the equivalent poetry translation. It not only produces deviation in understanding or even misunderstanding, but also causes readers unable to enjoy the same aesthetic experience as original readers do. Therefore, for the purposes of equivalent poetry translation and aesthetic reappearance, it is necessary and significant to make aesthetic compensation.This paper is a thesis about exploring aesthetic compensation in Chinese ancient poetry translation. The paper starts by analyzing literary aesthetic views. The differences between Chinese and western literary aesthetic views are reflected in readers’views about poetic genre, pattern, style, aesthetic performance and other aspects. By analyzing Chinese and western readers’ aesthetic traits and favors about poetry, the differences between Chinese and western literary esthetic views will be explored. In the following, the paper will analyze aesthetic loss from form, content and artistic conception, revealing how aesthetic loss is caused by different literary aesthetic views. In the final, a series of compensating methods will be put out to make up the aesthetic loss, which is also the most important part of this paper. Aesthetic compensation is also demonstrated from form, content and artistic conception, including many translating skills and methods. In this paper, the elaboration about aesthetic loss and aesthetic compensation is all specific, that is to say, the analysis will be carried out in the specific aspect of poetry appreciation. This is both a highlight and innovation of this paper.300Tang Poems are created in Tang dynasty, the golden years of Chinese poetry, and they are shinning stars in Chinese ancient poetry and also have great impact on the development of Chinese poetry. As for its prominence, the translation of300Tang Poems will be used to analyze aesthetic loss and aesthetic compensation. Many translations by both Chinese and western scholars will be quoted as case study.This paper will make a detailed demonstration on Chinese and western literary aesthetic views. Literary aesthetic view will be no longer a general vague category, and it will be reflected in the specific aspects of poetry appreciation. By analyzing aesthetic loss and providing compensating methods with examples, this paper will not only provide some excellent translations of300Tang Poems, more importantly give great enlightenment to the whole Chinese ancient poetry translation. The aesthetic compensating methods proposed in this paper will provide important reference to make the aesthetic loss in poetry translation or even in literary translation.
