Abstract


Doris Lessing, the author of the series Children of Violence, is consideredas the most important English female writer since Virginia Woolf. She won theNobel Prize in2007. Children of Violence is called “the greatest work ofPost-war young women”. The semi-autobiographical work takes17years to becompleted and five novels connect integrally which concerns and focuses onvarious social problems about racial oppression, the World War, cold war, thefate of Women and sexual relations. It depicts Martha’s whole life of, presentsthe dilemma, self-searching and introspection of modern women. What’s more,the series display the portrayal of a female’s psychological search from differentaspects in the society full of racial discrimination and gender inequality. Thisthesis explores Martha’s psychological process from the perspective ofpsychoanalysis. It also discusses intellectual females’ helplessness, loss anddisillusion in self and life quest when they face western grim reality throughMartha’s psychological three stages: aspiration, depression and desperation.This paper is divided into three chapters. Chapter One studies Martha’spsychological process from full of hope of escaping from the present living andto search the real self. As a poor white in Africa, Martha expects to save herselffrom real life by getting rid of the bondage of family, depending on the outsideforces and inner exploration. Her spiritual independence and strongself-consciousness cause her to revolt against the surroundings to seek identityand freedom through social and personal problems. Chapter Two analyzesMartha’s shock by various disillusion of reality. Martha pursues sex, love, marriage, role as a mother and political participation. After experiencing thefrustration of marriage, emotion and social, political activities, she becomesuneasy, anxious and disappointed. Chapter Three discusses that Martha leavesAfrica to London to exlpore and pursue her inner world by breaking away fromthe emotional and rational bondage, but the grim reality of the British Empire,depressed sexual relationship and female relationship make Martha feel helplessand despaired, eventually sinks into nervous breakdown.As the study shows, Children of Violence is not merely a femalebildungsroman but also a psychoanalytic novel. It records an English female’sdevelopment, especially to depict and creates psychology of heroine finely andsmoothly. The careful portrayal and description of Martha’s mentality reveal thatLessing concerns of individual survival problems, explores the ways throughwhich the human spirit keep balance and in a suitable position, meanwhile seeksand speculates about spiritual wasteland of Post-war women.
