Abstract

As an essential link between theories and practice, as well as an important part of translation studies, translation criticism plays significant roles in both translation theories and practice. The unique creativity and imagination contained in literary translations makes literary translation criticism differentiate from general translation criticism, and is more difficult to achieve an objective and accurate evaluation. Based on traditional Chinese translation and literary theories, Chinese scholar Wang Hongyin absorbs virtues of western theories and constructs a literary translation criticism system in view of western literary criticism. Ever since the publication of his masterpiece On the Criticism of Literary Translation, the book is commented as the declaration of the birth for China’s literary translation criticism studies, as well as a useful attempt for China’s literary translation criticism towards systematization and standardization. Meanwhile, literary translation criticism system proposed by French scholars Antoine Berman has also been considered as a milestone and one of the most important achievements in modern western translation researches. The system takes modern hermeneutics as theoretical basis, and covers a series of purpose, subjects, objects, axiology, and methodology. As a result, the author chooses these two literary translation criticism systems to adopt a comparative analysis, compares the similarities and differences between the two sides, points out their virtues and defects, and makes refection over the comparison result.Based on a large number of monographs, journal, dissertations and other documents, the author adopts a speculative research method, and attempts to conduct a descriptive and expositive research on the following questions:what are the commonness between Berman’s and Wang Hongyin’s system; what are the differences and what are the reasons for the differences; what are the virtues and defects between the two; and in the context of sino-western academic blending, whether or not should Chinese translation criticism translation construction possess Chinese characteristics.Through the comparison and analysis, the author finds that:(1).Both of the two literary translation criticism share the commonness like systematic, inter-disciplinary, critical, and cultural turn. Their discussions on the nature, the status, the subjectivity and objectivity of translation criticism also have something in common.(2). However, there are differences in translation criticism procedures, standards, and results (grading). Their difference in practical level is probably attributed to the difference of Chinese and English language, and their language family. Besides, different translation traditions and personal experience are also related to the differences.(3).Berman brings "productive" concept to translation criticism construction, affirms the status and significance of translation criticism, and opens a space for re-translation; while Wang Hongyin borrows western textual analysis, combines traditional sinology and aesthetics, and constructs a translation criticism system that is more adaptable for the evaluation of English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations.(4).Based on the comparison, the author believes that China’s translation criticism should possess Chinese characteristics, take specific time and geography (practical) features into accounts, and rise this kind of idea into the level of generalized epistemology with constructive concept.
