Abstract


Nowadays aging problem has aroused many concerns, Subjective well-being (SWB)is a very important standard to measure the quality of the seniors’ life, and the researchon the SWB of the seniors may help and improve their quality of life.This research adopted the data of China General Social Survey in2006, with asample of10151, of which the retired data is1160. Based on the forerunners’ research,the research was conducted to research on the SWB of the seniors by controlling severalindividual variables, such as sex, age, income, social status, and education level andchoosing social activity as the independent variable. Social contact consists of threeaspects: social activity richness, social activity participation and social relationshipcomplexity. Social activity richness refers to the adversity and richness of the seniorsparticipating in various social activities. Social activity participation means the depth andfrequency of the retired participation in a certain social activity. Social relationshipcomplexity is the complexity of the social interpersonal relationship of the retired.The results were as followed: a). Social activity richness has a positive impact onthe SWB of the retired, and its influence takes on a U level. The adversity of the socialactivity can improve the SWB of the seniors, but is should be controlled. b). Socialactivity participation has a positive impact on the SWB of the retired. That means if asenior takes part in a certain social activity frequently and deeply, he may have a higherlevel of SWB. c). Social activity complexity takes on a U-converse influence of theSWB of the seniors. The results show that social interpersonal relationship may helpimprove SWB, but it should be within certain degrees. In a nutshell, participating inabundant social activity, engaged in social activity and cultivating intimate interpersonalrelationship are beneficial for the retired to improve their SWB.
