According to a document in April 2004, Since CALL (computer-assisted language learning) has existed for about 40 years, Teachers should make full use of information technology to explore more teaching resources, improve students’ learning methods, and make student’ learning more efficient. Teachers should study modern technology, and try to combine the modern information technology and the English teaching. Vocabulary is one of three elements of language. Famous scholar vilkins said:"without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed. " So students should grasp the vocabulary, then they can have the following abilities such as speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translating. If teacchers can pay attention to and strengthen words in English teaching, the student can get rid of the biggest obstacle in English learning. This paper will discuss how to enlarge students’ vocabulary by using multimedia. First it tells us the background, the theoretical and practical significance of this question for discussion; second this topic analyses the research, including the research question, the object of study, the research tools and research process. Next is the literature review about the vocabulary teaching and multimedia foreign language teaching; Then, this topic discusses how the homemade multimedia courseware is practically used in the vocabulary teaching; Finally, through the analysis of experimental results,we can have a intensive study about the combination of the homemade multimedia courseware and the vocabulary teaching. Meanwhile, the key to solving the inefficiency of language learning is to combine traditional classroom teaching and the multimedia teaching. We try to find out more efficient, more systematical, more easy teaching method for high school students to learn English vocabulary.
