Abstract


At the early20century modern foundations rose, reaching more than ahundred years of experience in the growth process, and now at their top. Themodern foundations have a wild-ranging content, they have made a very deepinfluence on the economic sphere, cultural and social fields. Since1970thepolicies of reform and opening to the outside world not only have promotedeconomic development and social progress, but also have created favorableconditions for the development of modern foundations in our country.Influenced by economic system and political aspects, the developments ofmodern foundations in China are late and laggard. Right now some problemsthat need urgent solution still exist. Because of lacking managerial expertise,our cultural foundations are just in the initial stages, which do not conform tothe demand for the healthy development of cultural industries. How to improvethe management of modern foundations and make them play an active role isa new objection.This paper makes a comparative analysis between Chinese modernfoundations and American modern foundations through documents and casestudy method. Firstly, we discuss the cause of modern foundations andintroduce their history and current situation. U.S. National Endowment for theHumanities, National Endowment for the Arts, National Natural ScienceFoundation of China and National Publication Foundation of China are chieflyintroduced. Secondly, research the money management, organizationstructure and performance management of foundations to summarydevelopment features of modern foundations in China and America. Torecommend and suggest ways on further improvement of our culturalfoundations. Finally, improving the management of our cultural foundationsand increasing efficiency of fund utilization by learning from American modernfoundations’ successful experiences and compensating each other.
