In the teaching of senior high Chinese, modern and temporary prose has become so important that not only does it account for a relatively high percentage in the textbook but it also increasingly enjoys high favor in the College Entrance Examination. The prose, either describing personalities and incidents or expressing feelings by describing scenery or expressing arguments, all, in different ways, tells people what has happened in society and how people understand life. More importantly, furthered by the ideas of the New Curriculum Reform, modern and temporary prose provides a platform where humanity can develop well, which, if treated properly, is sure to bring a satisfactory outcome.The prose the writer has been researching in this article refers to the essays selected into the compulsory textbook used in Jiangsu Province. Beginning with analyzing the present situation of teaching modern and contemporary prose in senior high, this article is intended to put forward some coping strategies based on the requirements of the New Curriculum Reform as well as the characteristics of prose itself.According to the writer’s observation, senior high teachers have two extreme tendencies. One is just to leave it untouched, adopted by those who regard ancient-style essays as more important and hold the opinion that giving out some papers for students to read is enough---the Exclusive Type. The other one, the Addicted Type, is to explore it actively, supported by teachers who devotedly respond to the New Curriculum Reform by attempting to employ new teaching methods. Therefore, there exist quite a few problems in the teaching of modern and contemporary prose:1. The rather shallow interpretation of the material;2. The lack of overall reading;3. The rigid teaching styles;4. The improper teaching method;5. The shallow understanding of humanity.After serious consideration and careful research in the course of teaching, the writer puts forward some coping strategies with these problems:1. Interpret the material thoroughly and master the author’s writing purpose;2. Value the understanding of the whole passage as well as the characteristics of prose;3. Guide the students craftily and arouse their appreciation of beauty;4. Arrange the students to learn for themselves and strengthen their thinking training;5. Penetrate humanity education based on the material. Although not mature enough, these thoughts are intended to bring the problems to senior high teachers’ attention. Hopefully, teachers can identify problems with prose teaching under the present educational background and try to resist the bad effects. Moreover, they are expected to learn from the research and combine theory with practice, thus bringing real life to prose teaching. Only in this way can the students really reap the benefits, which makes much difference to inheriting and developing Chinese traditional culture.
