Abstract


With the development of display technology, the requirement of the quality and speed of the computer graphics is fast increasing. Texture mapping which can enhance the realistic of graphics immensely while the implementation is not complicate becomes a hot topic.First, this paper carries out deep research on the basic principle and key technology of texture mapping, including the definition and classification of the texture, texture mapping algorithm(Catmull algorithm, Blinn algorithm and two-part mapping), texture filtering technology(nearest-point sampling, bilinear filtering and trilinear filtering) and texture anti-aliasing technology(Mip-mapping and area summation).Basing on the solid texture theoretical, we analyze and optimize the process of texture mapping algorithm, dividing the whole algorithm into four parts:pre-filtering, projection transform, texture sampling and post-filtering, while having a detailed description of each part.Present a dedicated architecture of texture mapping unit with an optimized design of single-precis ion floating-point special unit and texture cache, against the processing speed and memory bandwidth problem. Use a small look-up table with quadratic polynomial approximation algorithm to achieve floating-point division. According to different sampling methods, configure cache mapping strategy among direct mapping, two-way set associative mapping and four-way set associative mapping.Finally, the design of the texture mapping unit has been synthesized under SMIC0.13μm CMOS process technology. The experiment result shows that the design is efficient for real time rendering.
