Abstract


Figures of speech are the center of the study of traditional rhetoric. Since, from the rhetorical angle, there exists in every outstanding literary work a unique rhetorical system, a good literary work can serve as the vehicle for and be indispensable to the study of figures of speech. Up to now, some scholars have done some related researches on figures of speech in one form of literature, novels. However, judging from their research method, they only superficially describe and classifiably introduce the figures of speech employed in fictional texts without deep analysis on the cognitive psychology and operational mechanism in the formation of various figures of speech. Thus, the study on figures of speech reaching a plateau cannot keep abreast with the times and achieve theoretical breakthroughs and innovations.Selecting Jing HuaYuan, a representative of the intelligence fictions in the middle of Qing Dynasty, as the study material of figures of speech, and cooperating the world-wide and advanced cognitive theory, this thesis will tentatively analysize the application of figures of speech and explore its forming mechanism and cognitive motivation, hopefully, to provide a new perspective for interpreting rhetorical phenomena in fictional texts and deepen the theories of researches on figures of speech. The body of this paper includes three chapters, of which the second and the third ones are the focus, interpreting figures of speech used in Jing HuaYuan from the cognitive perspective.The first chapter is made up of three parts: the first part generally introduces eleven popular figures of speech involved in Jing HuaYuan and connects the application with the author’s creation motives. The second part discusses briefly the Jing HuaYuan’s figure of the corpus of value and the research methods. The third part, analysizing rhetoric in the fictional text of Jing HuaYuan and its language, exposes the significance of the study on figures of speech used in the novel from the angle of cognitive theory. Chapter Two, consisting of four parts, analysizes cognitive psychology mechanism of figures of speech in terms of thinking. The first part briefly explains the relationship between thinking and cognition and enhances the importance of thinking in cognitive study. The following sections, with specific cases, concretely explain and induce the eleven figures of speech involved from several aspects of thinking. The second part focuses on cognitive psychology of simile, metonymy, adduction and pun from the angle of relocatable thinking. The third part analysizes the cognitive psychology of exaggeration, parody, FeiBai and word-chromatography in terms of creative thinking. The fourth explores the cognitive psychology of antithesis, parallelism and duplication from the perspective of beauty-seeking thinking.Chapter Three analysizes the formation mechanism of the figures of speech from the perspective of the cognitive linguistics. This chapter, made up of five parts, involves the theories of metaphor and metonymy, basic categories and the prototype theory, as well as iconicity theory in cognitive linguistics, which correspounds with the eleven figures of speech used in the novel, which, thus, reveals the cognitive mechanism behind figures of speech. The first part analysizes simile and metonymy with the theory of metaphor and metonymy in order to understand their cognitive mechanism. The second, with the basic categories and the prototype theory, explains the formation mechanism of parody and FeiBai. The third part focuses on the formation mechanism of pun, adduction,and word-chromatography with Autonomy一Dependency framework. The fourth part interprets the formation mechanism of antithesis, parallelism and duplication based on the theory of iconicity. The last part analysizes the formation mechanism of hyperbole according to the conceptual integration theory.
