Abstract

As a typical equipment for separation, hydrocyclone has been widely studied all over the world. The implementation of it into the unit process is also a hot issue currently.Printing and dyeing wastewater, represented by the water solution with methylene blue and methyl orange, is treated using fly ash as the adsorbent and hydrocyclone as the separation device in this study. An orthogonal test and a single factor experiment were designed to determine the influence of the particle size of fly ash, concentration of fly ash, organic concentration and inlet flow on the organic adsorption efficiency and separation efficiency. The results show that the particle size of fly ash and inlet flow rate have more influence on the separation efficiency, while particle size of fly ash and concentration of fly ash influence more on the adsorption efficiency. In the best working condition for adsorption (particle size of fly ash is 350-400 mesh, concentration is 900 mg/L, organic concentration is 70 mg/L, and inlet flow rate is 0.88 m3/h), adsorption efficiency of methylene blue and methyl orange is 60.57%and 71.48% separately. The isotherms and kinetic models for adsorption process inside a hydrocyclone were also obtained. Moreover, Computational Fluid Dynanics (CFD) method was adopted to investigate the distributions of pressure and velocities inside a hydrocyclone.
