Abstract

Around one century ago, Pickering discovered that the colloidal particles situated at the oil-water interface can also stabilize emulsions, So the emulsions stabilized by solid particles was called "Pickering emulsion" . This emulsion has been intensively investigated by many researchers and used to research on mini emulsion polymerization systems, and as templates for preparing advanced materials, such as Janus particles, microlens arrays, and colloid capsules. It also was used in the industries of pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics. But It is a novel way that we used Pickering emulsion to deal with high concentration organic wastewater. In this paper, we researched on the oil separation from the Pickering emulsion containing particles and organic substances. The main research works are summarized as follows:1. Calcium carbonate particles were modified by titanic coupling agent for suitable surface characters. Pickering emulsion were solely stabilized by modified calcium carbonate particles in wastewater containing styrene system, then the emulsions were separated by centrifugation to decrease the content of styrene. The effects of the mass of the surface modifying agent and the mass of the powder were studied. The properties of the modified calcium carbonate particles were characterized by TG,CA.The microstructures of emulsions were observed by microscope. The concentration of styrene was measured by gas-chromatograph. The results indicated that titanic coupling agent enlarged the contact angle and changed surface character of calcium carbonate particles from hydrophile to lipophile. When the dosage of titanic coupling agent was 0.3% and 0.6%, the removal rate of styrene were higher. When increasing the addition of calcium carbonate particles, the number and diameter of the drops of Pickering emulsion raised up. The highest removal rate was over ninety percent.2. Pickering emulsion was used to treat nitrobenzene wastewater in the same way. The effects of the process parameters (the dosage of titanic coupling agent, the initial concentration of nitrobenzene and the addition of calcium carbonate particles) were researched. The results indicated that the parameters and removal rates did not have direct proportions. The highest removal rate can be got at suitable conditions. There were little influences on removal rate by ultrasonic breaking machine or by high speed agitator for emulsification.3. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the photocatalytic degradation in Pickering emulsion can be a useful way to treat wastewater. Pickering emulsions are formed by two immiscible fluids (nitrobenzene and water) and colloidal particles (zinc oxide) adsorbed at the interface between them. In this investigation, nano zinc oxide powders were made and modified by titanic coupling agent. The effects of the removal rate were experimented. The as-prepared materials have been characterized by TEM, CA, IR, XRD and microscope. The microstructures of emulsions were observed by microscope. The results demonstrated that nano zinc oxide were homogeneous with a diameter of 12.5nm. The titanic coupling agent enlarged the contact angle and changed surface character of calcium carbonate particles from hydrophile to lipophile. The steady Pickering emulsions were formed when nano zinc oxide with suitable surface character. The results indicated that Pickering emulsions strengthened the process of photocatalytic degradation.
