Research on PSA/Cotton Blend Fabric of Coatinging of Water Resistance and Moisture Permeability

Abstract


In this study, Moisture permeability could be significantly improved by adding carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into water-dispersible polyurethane on Polysulfonamide (PSA)/cotton blend fabric (50/50). It was found that different parameters, such as amount of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) additive, thicknesses of coating, temperature and time of curing, could influence coating effects of water resistance and moisture permeability, and that optimum conditions were with 0.35% of CMC additive, a coating thickness of 100μm and a curing temperature of 130℃and a heating time of 3min after orthogonal experiment. Under these conditions above, moisture permeability could be up to 3422g/m~2·24h, air permeability was 1.68 L/m~2·s, and water resistance could be at 5 grade.Pressure plasma was applied to change surface properties of fabric and make fabric be coated successfully with lower viscosity of coating agent. Coating properties could also be affected by different processing times, discharge powers and working pressures. The fabric was treated with a low temperature argon-plasma, at a gas pressure of 25Pa and a discharge power of 50W for 30s. After coating with low pressure plasma treatments, the moisture permeability increased from 3422g/m~2·24h to 6594g/m~2·24h and the air permeability increased from 1.68 L/m~2·s to 17.80 L/m~2·s, while the water resistance remained stable at grade 5. Besides, the fabric was treated with a air pressure plasma, at a discharge power of 500W for 2.8min, and then the moisture permeability increased to 5943g/m~2·24h and the air permeability increased to 16.8 L/m~2·s, while the water resistance remained stable at grade 5.Additives such as CMC and sodium alginate (ALG) could improve moisture permeability of coated fabric by adding them into water-dispersible polyurethane. CMC was generally superior to ALG, and CMC-containing water-dispersible polyurethane with adding polyethylene glycol (PEG) could dramatically improve moisture permeability and handle of coated fabric. It was found that under the conditioin with 0.25% CMC and 10% PEG, moisture permeability could be up to 6722g/m~2·24h, and that air permeability was 12.8 L/m~2·s and that water resistance could be at 5 grade and that bending length of coated fabrics turned to be 5.51cm.When the quantity of adhesive dispensed on PSA/cotton blend fabric was 41.5g/m~2, the moisture permeability of this laminated fabric could be up to 8281g/m~2·24h and hydrostatic pressure value was up to 1050 cmH2O. Besides, this laminated fabric had great flame retardant performance.
