Abstract

With the rapid development of conventional intensive cultivation at present, that some problems appear unceasingly, such as environmental pollution of livestock excreta, food safety and animal welfare which have blocked the development of animal husbandry gravely. As a replacing mode of resolving the problems in current animal husbandry and agriculture synthetically, organic husbandry is being concerned gradually. Before extending organic husbandry broadly, however, it is necessary to understand the effect of this cultivation mode on the production performance and product quality of livestock. In this research, the effects of three modes, organic cultivation, conventional cultivation in barn and in cage, on the production performance, health status and egg quality in green eggshell layer was compared. The aim is to provide the theory basis of expending organic cultivation. The details are divided into two parts as follows.Test 1 Effects of organic cultivation on the production performance and health status in green eggshell layer Two hundred and seventy 50-week-old green eggshell layers were randomly divided into 3 groups. In organic cultivation (OC) group, layers were feed on floor of henhouse combining the field browse, in conventional cultivation in barn (CB), on floor of henhouse, and in conventional cultivation in cage (CC) group, were in multilayer cage of henhouse. The effects of three modes on average laying rate, average egg weight, feed intake, health status of layers and economic income were compared. The result showed that in OC group, the average laying rate was the highest in the whole experimental period, the average egg weight was slightly lower in comparison of other two groups but there was not significant difference (P>0.05), the average feed intake was the lowest in the early and medium stage and lower than that in other two groups in the whole experimental period, and the feed-egg ratio was the lowest and significantly lower than that in CC group (P<0.05). No death occurred in OC group, the layers presented the best health status, and their appearance and gait scores were significantly better than those in CC group (P<0.05,0.01). The gross earning of OC group was 3.38 times and 8.25 times more than that of CB and CC group respectively. These results indicated that organic cultivation could improve the production performance and health status of layer, and gained much higher economy reward.Test 2 Effects of organic cultivation on the egg quality in green eggshell layer Animal grouping and treatment were same as Test 1. The eggs samples were collected in four stages of experimental period. The change of eggshell shape index, eggshell thickness and strength, yolk index, water contents and protein contents of albumen and yolk, yolk color, fat contents, phosphatide contents and cholesterol contents of yolk were determined. The results showed that In OC group, the average eggshell shape index in the whole experimental date was highest and in the fourth stage was significantly higher than that in CB group (P<0.01), the eggshell thickness was markedly higher than that in CB group (P<0.01), the average eggshell relative weight was lightest in the whole experimental period, the yolk color was more than 10 Roch degrees, the highest reaching 10.78 Roch degrees and significantly higher than those in CB and CC group (P<0.01), the protein contents of albumen and yolk was slightly lower than that in CB group without obvious difference (P>0.05), the average fat content of yolk was significantly higher than that in CB group (P<0.05), especially in yolk the cholesterol contents was lowest and observably lower than those in other two groups in the later stage (P<0.01), and the phosphatide content was the highest and significantly higher than those in other two groups. These results indicated that organic cultivation could raise the edible and nutritional quality of egg.
