Since John Russell found soliton in the water wave in 1834, many researchers began theirwork on the aspect of soliton mainly because it has a lot of interesting properties, which make thestudy of soliton become a hot topic in a variety of fields. As an universal nonlinear phenomenonin nature, soliton can be formed when a perfect balance between the group velocity dispersion ef-fect which widens the pulse width and the nonlinear effect which narrows pulse width is achievedunder appropriate conditions in the process of a pulse transmitting in a nonlinear medium. Theformed solitons can maintain their shapes and velocities not only during propagation but also dur-ing mutual collisions. Due to the particle-like property, soliton has many promising and potentialapplication prospects in a lot of fields. In the context of optics, the optical soliton is the soliton formed in the propagation of anoptical pulse in various nonlinear medium. In the field of optical communication, the soliton infiber can be taken as an ideal carrier and thus the research involved the soliton in fiber is always ahot topic. Recently, with the study on the interaction between a cold atomic medium and opticalfield developing deeply, the optical soliton formed and propagated in a cold atomic system hasattracted considerable attention. One of the striking features of optical soliton formed in a coldatomic medium is that its group velocity is much smaller than the speed of light in vacuum. In thisthesis, by using the semi-classical method, we study the formation and propagation of ultraslowoptical soliton in a multi-level cold atomic system. The main content is as follows,Firstly, we describe the electromagnetically induced transparency produced from the inter-action between optical field and cold atomic medium. Several interesting phenomena includingultra-slow light propagation, nonlinear effects enhancing caused by electromagnetically inducedtransparency have been studied. Then, we brie?y introduce the formation and propagation ofultraslow solitons in cold atomic systems by taking a three-levelĪ-type and a four-level N-typecold atomic system as examples. Finally, we focus our study on the generation and propagation ofultraslow optical solitons in a five-level hyper inverted-Y cold atomic system. We start by writingthe Hamiltonian of this model and obtain the corresponding dynamic equations of the atomicmotion and the evolving equation of the probe pulsed field. After considering the nonlineareffects in the propagation of the probe pulse, we have demonstrated that both the dark and brightsolitons can be formed in the atomic system with ultraslow group velocities.
