Abstract

Phosphorus removal is very important to prevent eutrophication in water body. Biological phosphorus removal is a most wildly applied method all over the world. Phosphorus Accumulation Organisms (PAOs) are bacteria with great capability of phosphorus-accumulating. Thus, great attention has been attracted on PAOs in biological phosphorus removal, but they are still far from being understood by now. Two laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated for biological phosphorus removal in alternating anaerobic-aerobic or anaerobic-anoxic modes, respectively. PAOs were enriched in the anaerobic-aerobic SBR and denitrifying PAOs (DPAOs) were enriched in the anaerobic- anoxic SBR. 20 strains of bacteria have been isolated by traditional way of cultivating from the two sets of SBR which are stably operated. Their bionomics and characteristic were investigated. The experimental results show that:1. Phosphate release and uptake activity is remarkable in A/O SBR operated 14 days in alternating anaerobic-aerobic mode. Under the condition of COD=180mg/L, PO43--P=10mg/L, NH4+-N=30mg/L, both removal rates of phosphate and ammonium are higher than 95%.2. Phosphate release and uptake activity are also remarkable in A/A SBR by 25 days alternating anaerobic- anoxic mode. Under the condition of COD=180mg/L, PO43--P=20mg/L, NO3--N=25mg/L, both removal rates of phosphate and nitrate are also higher than 95%.3. Thirty-seven strains of bacteria have been isolated from the two SBRs and seven of them have been confirmed as phosphorus accumulating bacteria by way of PHB straining, poly-P straining and analysis of phosphate uptake and release. Five strains of them are aerobic PAOs and two are DPAOs. 4. The activities of phosphate uptake and release of the aerobic PAOs are higher than that of DPAOs on the whole. FCO-12 is the most active one of them..5. Strain SYO-1, SYA-2,SYA-5 and FCO-2 were identified as Pseudomonas sp.,SYO-2 Corynebacterium sp., SYO-8 Enterobacter sp., FCO-12 Staphylococcus sp. in terms of their physiological and biochemical testing results.
