Modification of Talc Powder and Its Reinforcing and Toughening on Recycled Polypropylene

In the present study, modified talc powder with better performance was found by adding different coupling agents, on this base, core(modified talc powder)-shell(LDPE) particles were prepared. When separately blended with treated talc power and core shell particles, the composites were tested both by surface and mechanical testing.(1) Different coupling agents were chosen in this study, including aluminium coupling agent,titanate coupling agent,silane coupling agent. The contact angle, activation rate and oil absorbency all increased in various degree. Different coupling agents treated talc powder were added into recycled PP. After blending, the flexural, impact and tensile strength of the composites were tested. It is found that the best content was 1 percent. In addition to that, DSC was used to study the melt process and SEM was used to observe the morphology of impact fracture. The result showed that aluminate coupling agent gives the best modification, because its treatment the melting point increased and the compatibility was better.(2) The method to prepare rigid core (talcum powder)-soft shell (LDPE withlow melt point and high melt index) structure particle was researched. Furthermore, this kind of core-shell particle is used to strengthen and toughen recycled PP.The influence of the core-shell particle on recycled PP in tensile strength, flexural modulus, impact strength, processing fluidity and heat resisting property was studied. The result showed that positive effects can be obtained through filling this kind of core-shell structure particles in recycled PP.(3) The effect of modified talc powder on non-isothermal crystallization behaviour and kinetics analysis of recycled PP/talc powder blends was investigated. It was observed that the talc powder plays the role of nucleation agent. And among all the used coupling agents aluminium coupling agent showed the best nucleation effect.
