Abstract


The brain functional imaging is an important method to study cognition and learning capability. Nowadays, these techniques measure the electrophysiological and hemodynamic signals to realize functional imaging. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique measuring hemodynamic change with multi-parameter. In this study, Stroop effect, which is widely used in cognitive neuroscience, was measured by NIRS in two points.First, the home-made NIRS and commercial event-related potential (ERP) simultaneously detected the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during the Chinese characters Stroop task to acquire the activation area in conflict processing. Sixteen college students participated. The obvious Stroop effect was observed in reaction time, NIRS data and ERP data. From the significant correlations between hemodynamic and electrophysiological signals, P600, which reflects the conflict solving processing, was located at PFC area. The relationship of two signals reveals that the vascular response reflects the cumulative effect of neural activities. The△[deoxy-Hb] is a more sensitive hemodynamic parameter. The multi-modality method combining NIRS and ERP is feasible and helpful to explore the neurovascular coupling.Second, nineteen dyslexic children and twenty-four normal children were measured by NIRS when they performed the phonological and semantic Stroop task. The dyslexic children had lower activation level in PFC, compared with normal children. The deficits in phonological processing make dyslexic children have difficulty in accessing the semantic information. The normal children rely more on orthographic information, as the phonological information for the dyslexic children. Considering the discrimination of NIRS in dyslexic and normal children with the Stroop task, NIRS is reliable to distinguish in clinical measuring.
