Abstract

With the increase in the number of mobile telecommunication subscribers and with the demand for higher data rate, variety and better service, second generation mobile cellular system fall to satisfied all these requirements. There is a need to develop a new network standard in mobile communication infrastructure which can provide services that second generation mobile cellular system cant provides. The technology need is call third generation cellular system (3G). The intended service for 3G mobile phone users include services like transmitting high speed data, video and multimedia traffic as well as voice signals. The dream of 3G is to provide a wide variety of communication services to anybody, everywhere anytime. This has been said, the capacity and performance of 3G system are limited by MAI (Multiple Access Interference) and near-far problem..MAI refers to the interference between direct- sequence users because of the non orthogonal propriety of the users codes. The near-far problem is the fact that the signal from users near the BS is received with high power that those far away. The conventional detector does not take into account the existence of MAI, MUD such optimum maximum-likelihood detector ZF linear MUD and MMSE we address in this thesis did. We see that the optimum maximum-likelihood detector has a computational complexity that grows exponentially with the number of users. Such a high complexity serves as a motivation to devise suboptimum detectors having lower computational complexities.Finaly we consider the performance characteristics of the various detectors and compare them in term of asymptotic multiuser efficiency. We show that asymptotic multiuser efficiency can be used to confirm whether a detector is near-far resistant detector or not. We show by simulation that conventional single user detector is not near-far resistant detector and decorrelator is and even perform better near-far resistant than optimum detector in a certain condition.
