Abstract

As the development of modern communication networks, the scaling property of network traffic becomes more and more complicated. Not only the traditional Poisson model can’t describe the scaling property of network traffic, but the self-similar approach to studying scaling property is also challenged. Applying these models in analysis and design of communication network systems may lead to underestimation of metrics of network performance. As a result, research on modeling methods that provide the accurate description of scaling property of network traffic providing quantitive tools for analysis, designment, dimension and control of computer systems is significant for the development of modern communication networks. In this thesis, research and comparison of self-similarity and multifractal that are are different behaviors of network traffic associated with different mechanism in different scale ranges are given firstly, and it is pointed out that multifractal is more accuate and finer than self-similarity in describing of the scaling property of network traffic. And applying multifractal theory, the aggregated multifractal network traffic is studies as the superposition of multifractal processes, and a novel multifractal explanation for the weak scaling property observed in current aggregated traffic is proposed, and it is pointed out that modern network traffic can be described as the superposition of multifractal processes. And multifractal network traffic models are studied. As current there is a lack of direct description of scaling property in current network traffic model, multifractal analysis is introduced in network traffic modeling. Network traffic model based on multifractal analysis extracts characteristic parameters from multifractal spectrum which is used to quantitate scaling phenomena and ensures the accuracy of the description of scaling property. Performance analysis of network traffic model based on multifractal analysis is simulated on real traffic traces and compared to the multifractal wavelet model that is widely used currently. The results of simulation validate the accuracy and validity of our proposed model and realize the exact and complete description of network traffic scaling property. Finally, the main contributions in this thesis are summarized and some suggestions and directions for the future work in this field are given.
