Abstract

P2PSIP (Peer-to-Peer Session Initiation Protocol) is proposed to leverage Peer-to-Peer computing to control multimedia sessions in a decentralized manner. However, existing P2PSIP systems put too much emphasis on the decentralization of SIP elements and the briefness of distribution. To some extent, P2PSIP system is manageable, but the control of the entire system is still relatively weak. The autonomy of P2PSIP nodes fails to guarantee the quality of service while applying to the carrier-grade environment.Based on the above problems, a hierarchical P2PSIP architecture is proposed to address the manageable problems which haven’t been solved in the P2PSIP literature. The P2PSIP network is divided into three levels: Super Node, SIP terminal node and global server node. Super Nodes form the structure of P2PSIP overlay, and they are equivalent to the role of traditional single SIP server by sharing load and cooperation. SIP terminal nodes connect to the Super Node in client/server model. They access to the P2PSIP network through Super Node to publish and locate resources. Global server nodes are responsible for user’s information management and call accounting, as well as providing access to P2PSIP network for Super Node. In P2PSIP networks, resources distribution and localization algorithm is based on the Kademlia DHT structure. Super Node publish the registered SIP user’s information to the nearest K nodes as a proxy SIP server and searchs the called user in P2PSIP network when there is a SIP INVITE request.Actual deployment test and exhaustive simulations based on NS2 (Network Simulation Version 2) are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed P2PSIP schemes. Results indicate that the hierarchical approach provides good scalability that the service capacity of the P2PSIP overlay composed by N Super Nodes is approximately equal to the sum of the service capacity of N Super Nodes. The mean search operation delay during the call setup is about 1985ms and the 95th percentile of search operation delay is 2917ms. Considering the delay caused by SIP message, the overall call setup delay of the system is below 6.6s which is well below the recommendation of ITU-T that the 95th percentile of call setup delay is less than 11s. The test results also show that the systemarchitecture is feasible and scalable.
