Abstract


Earlier, foreign direct investment (FDI) is mainly concentrated in manufacturing. With the adjustment of world industrial structure, the global FDI gradually shifts to the service industry in the 1980s when Liaoning’s service sector develops in a crucial period. International experience shows that the services proportion shows a steady and obvious upward trend when per capita GDP is beyond 1000 U.S. dollars, whereas the proportion of service sector’s added value will reach 50% and employment share will reach 40% when per capita GDP reaches 3,000 U.S. In the second half of 2006, the per capita GDP in Liaoning exceeds more than 3000 U.S. dollars for the first time, and the service sector is developing in a critical period. Thus, it is significant to study FDI’s impact on the development of Liaoning’s service sector.In the context of the international FDI shifting towards service industry and Liaoning’s demand to vigorously develop service industry, and based on service-industry theory, this paper describes FDI quo status in Liaoning’s service industry. FDI’s impact on the development of Liaoning’s service sector has been analyzed in six aspects of capital effect, technology spillovers, employment expansion effect, trade effects, industrial effects, on the basis of which, this paper makes an empirical study on the relationship between the use of FDI and service sector growth from 1988 to 2007 in Liaoning by ADF unit root test, cointegration test and Granger causality test. This paper is divided into seven chapters. Chapter I is the Introduction. The background, significance and literature of this paper are reviewed. Chapter II overviews the relevant theory on service sector-FDI..Chapter III, in theory, analyzes the positive effects of FDI and the challenges ahead. Chapter IV analyzes service the use of FDI in service industry and the quo status of service development in Liaoning Province. Chapter V is focused on the analysis on the causal relations and their role in the development ways of FDI and services. According to the analysis above, Chapter VI makes policy recommendations in promoting FDI utility to develop service industry in Liaoning. Chapter VII is the conclusion.
