Abstract

Fertilizer industry wastewater contains high concentrations of COD, NH3-N as well as other pollutants. It will cause serious pollution on the water and natural environment if the wastewater is discarded without effective treatment. The Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) process has various advantages, including high volume and hydraulic loading, low infrastructure investment, good effluent quality and low operation energy consumption. Therefore, in this study the BIOFOR BAF process was utilized to treat real fertilizer industry wastewater collected from Urumqi Petrochemical Company. The experiment examined influences of water flow pattern, reactors in series, activated carbon module combination on removal efficiency of COD and other pollutants. Especially, the BAF operating conditions (hydraulic loading, aeration, filter layer height, etc.) was reviewed detailed. The results showed that:the BIOFOR BAF process achieved good removal efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen pollutants, under operation conditions:filtration rate 1~2 m/h, gas-water ratio (1-3):influent COD loading 1.18~5.57 kg/(m3·d), NH3-N loading 0.26~0.62 kg/(m3·d), The COD, NH3-N removal capabilities were 0.7~4.76,0.15~0.52 kg/(m3·d), respectively. Study indicated this process provided with a strong capability of simultaneous carbon and nitrogen removal.
