Abstract

Active fibers can be used to make the laser, optical amplifier, broadband light resource and so on. They play an essential role in the industry and military, for example, active fibers are core components of laser inertial confinement fusion device and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA). However, now the performance of existing active fibers can not fully meet requirements of the high speed optical communication. It is extremely important to improve the bandwidth, efficiency and amplification of active fibers. At the same time, it is necessary to improve their flexibility. Thus, research on new materials and technologies that are available for the fabrication of active fibers attract much attention in these years. The thesis firstly reviews the work in the area of doped special fibers. We proposed that nanomaterials can be used to fabricate new types of doped fibers. By comparing the characteristics and fabrication process of III-V semiconductors, InP was chosen as the doped material. We have successfully produced two kinds of new fibers by the mean of modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD):the InP nano-particles doped fiber and InP nano-film inner cladding fiber. Then the dispersion of InP nano-particles doped fiber is calculated in the wavelength of 1.2um-1.6um. Its dispersion is different from that of standard fiber because the doped nano particles have quantum effect. Then the supercontinuum generation of InP nano-film inner cladding fiber is explored, including theoretical simulation and experiments. The electric field distribution is simulated through the finite element method (FEM). The simulation result indicates that the InP nano film can confine the electric distribution in the core. In addition, it is calculated that the effective refractive index is 1.585. A 20dB supercontinuum about 150nm in the telecommunication band is generated by infecting 1550nm,120fs,50MHz repetition rate optical pulse into this kind of fiber. In the end, the thesis presents a positive outlook on the potential application of the nano-material doped fibers in the future.
