Abstract


The inner city is the most traditional existing district of Yongkang down town. It uses Jiefang Road as the main axis, and takes 1.24 square kilometers which reaches Huaxi to the east, Ziwei Mid Road to the west, Shenli Road to the south, and Chengbei East Road to the north. The protection and the renewal project is ready to start, and the related legal plan has been completed. At present, the urban design work which is for 9.99 hectares core area (also called "Cultural District of Old City") is in progress.This article studied the urban design of "Cultural District of Old City" in a theoretical level based on the interpretation of urban catalyst theory, in order to make the process of urban design practical scientifically and efficiently based on the theoretical studies.First, this article made interpretation and refining about the source and basic thought of urban catalyst theory, especially about the theoretical value of its application in the urban design process, and enumerated several successful cases about the application of this theory.Second, this article summarized and analyzed the precondition of the "Cultural District of Old City" urban design project including current pattern, situation of historical building, result of urban planning and its constraint on urban design.Furthermore, this article focused on the several key issues of "Cultural District of Old City" urban design project in Yongkang city based on the theory of Urban Catalysts. First, the existing historical buildings stand a good chance to be the original catalyst points according to this theory. This article discussed the relevant issues about how to make historical buildings catalyst points. Second, it discussed how to create catalyst by means of urban design. According to the main objective of urban design, the author concerned two issues about the creation of catalyst:first, how to determine the basic structure of spatial form; second, how to determine the basic layout of urban function.At the conclusion and prospect part, the author analyzed the key points about whether an urban design result which has urban catalyst potential can produce catalytic effect.
