Abstract

Geological hazards frequently occur in China. Since Western China is a mountainous region, landslide is the most common geological hazard in this area and of significant damage. With the development of national economy, the construction of railways, roads, mining, water conservancy and civil engineering often plays a detrimental role effect on the environment, even results in landslides. Govornment invests a huge amount of money for landslide control every year. Anti-sliding piles are able to control landsides effectively and conveniently, so widely used in geotechnical engineering. However, soil-piles system is complex and the interaction mechanism between them is still unsolved. Therefore, pile design is often based on experience, which either costs a lot or is unsafe. In this paper, combined with theoretical analysis, experiments and numerical method are employed to study the outcomes of landslide control using piles, the interaction in pile groups and pile design. The main contents and achievements of this article are as follows:①Base friction experiment was conducted to analyze the performance of piles and the mechanism of double rows of piles. The influence of row distance was also considered. Results show: double rows of piles have better outcomes in landslide control. But long row distance is inadvisable in pile design. When the pile row distance decreased, the stabilizing force of pile in back row became smaller. But the stabilizing force of pile in back row is bigger than front row in all cases.②Considering the deficiency of traditional calculation methods of stabilizing force, a new efficient method named matrix method was presented. This method is based on imbalance thrust force method and was proved more rational. Matrix method can be used to determine the best location where stabilizing force is the smallest for both one row and multiple rows of piles. This method was then verified in an engineering example.③ABAQUS was employed to analyze the same slope in step 2. Results show: the safety factor obtained by finite element method (FEM) is similar with imbalance thrust force method. Anti-sliding pile support is able to raise the safety factor of this slope to 1.20. Though the distributions of sheers are slightly different, the maximum sheers of the pile calculated by FEM is almost the same as m method.
