Abstract


Attribution is basic in our daily life since we tend to seize the reasons behind everything. However, individuals’attributional styles vary greatly. Sense of Career self-efficacy, which is concerned with the confidence in career choosing and the success in finding a job ultimately, is the application and development of the theory of self-efficacy to job hunting and career choosing.Instruction on job hunting and career choosing is vital to a syllabus for college students. However, the traditional career psychology does not shed too much light on the instruction. Most of the instructions on career choosing focus on the tough competition on the labor market and tips and theories for finding a job and therefore fail to provide psychological support and aid to the students. Studies on career choosing form the perspective of motivation and cognition are undermined. Therefore the current research attempts to explore students’job hunting and career choosing from the perspective of attributional styles and self-efficacy, which will shed insights for instructors on career choosing and psychologists.The dissertation falls into four parts. The first part reviews the literature on attributional styles and Sense of Career self-efficacy. It is held that attributional style is the individuals’unique cognitive way of attribution and its resultant unique attribution trend. Attributional styles reflect ones’personality and cognition and affect their motivation and actions. Sense of Career self-efficacy is the cognition about the tasks and actions related to job hunting and the confidence and beliefs in achieving a career goal. Sense of Career self-efficacy affects the content and ways of job hunting and career choosing.In Part Two, research questions, goals and hypothesis are proposed.In the third part there are two empirical studies:a correlational study and an interventional study. The correlational study is on the relationship between attributional styles and career self-efficacy. It is found that students of different gender, grade and major have different attributional styles and Sense of Career self-efficacy. Different dimensions of attributional styles are correlated with relevant dimensions of Sense of Career self-efficacy. The interventional study is on the effects of attributional style training on career self-efficiency. It is found that Sense of Career self-efficacy is improved after the attributional style training. Therefore the causal relationship between attributional style and Sense of Career self-efficacy is confirmed by the strictly controlled experiment.The last part concludes and reflects on the whole research, proposing the shortcomings of the research and expectations for further study.
