In the era of information and network as well as the digital audio-visual experiences have not only enriched our entertainment life, but also offered equal opportunity and more convenient access of obtaining information and knowledge. Texts, images, audio and video clips carry various information. As Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) goes further, everyone can participate in the information propagation process, where video occupies the largest proportion.The trend of handheld terminals development is to be mobile, portable and multimedia, that is being able to support video at terminals. This kind of video is mostly based on read-write of memory card If one needs to watch live programs, a video interface is required at the handheld terminal. Owing to the different resolution of handheld devices, it is necessary to resolve the pixel sampling problem, i.e. image scaling technology.This thesis introduces some algorithms such as Nearest neighbor interpolation, Bi-linear interpolation, and propose a new method called Conditional interpolation which makes up for the disadvantages of the two prior algorithms, The algorithm is simulated by MATLAB and implemented on FPGA platform. The result indicates that less hardware resources are used and the image quality is much better compared with the general algorithms, and this system is able to support dynamic video.The research work of the dissertation includes:1. Make extensive discussion on video interface standard of handheld terminals.2. Systematically summarize the principle and application of some general image scaling algorithms, introduce the latest image scaling technology, simulate part of the algorithm based on MATLAB, and evaluate the results including merits and demerits.3. Combine the advantages of both Nearest neighbor interpolation and Bi-linear interpolation, put forward a Conditional interpolation in which hardware is easy to realize and image scaling effect is considerable, and make further discussion and extensional research on this Conditional interpolation.4. Make contrastively analysis of various algorithms based on the data and experimental results.5. Engage in Modelsim simulation and FPGA implementation on Nearest neighbor interpolation, Bi-linear interpolation and Conditional interpolation using the desktop display to simulate handheld terminal and FPGA video processing board serving as hardware platform.
