Abstract


Philip P Altbach , one of the most famous international higher education experts in the world, is renowned for his rich experience of international communication and high quality research in internationalization. He has been regarded as a leader for his significant contribution to higher education internationalization research.Altbach’s ideas of higher education internationalization are divided into four part, concepts and factors analysis of higher education internationalization, motivations and landscape of higher education internationalization, inequality phenomenon and roots of higher education internationalization, influence and trend of higher education internationalization. The formation of these ideas is based on his great breadth of learning, meticulous thinking and rich experience of international communication, for which, his ideas not only have theoretical values but practical meaning.Altbach’s ideas of higher education internationalization have distinct characteristics and complete study methods. There are four characteristics in his ideas: crisis consciousness all the time, concern about the third world by all appearances, keeping pace with the times and leading over the rest of the world, emphasizing practice and speaking on the solid ground. The following are the main features of the research methods of his ideas: first, Altbach has analyzed internationalization with multidisciplinary methods, such as history, politics, sociology and economy; second, considering issues from different stances. Because of his different stances and university of international higher education, his ideas cannot contain strong American arrogance, but sympathy and understanding to the third world; last, analyzing from multi-angles, Altbach formed complete and solid logic system through world system theory and conflict theory.Altbach’s ideas of higher education internationalization have last-reaching impact on China. His articles on internationalization have been cited more. The reasons that his ideas on internationalization have influenced greatly to China are these: brilliant ideas, various ways of spreading, high relevancy to development of higher education internationalization of China.
