Abstract

Numerical hindcast of typhoon wind fields and waves could effectively provide the supplementary information to the measured data, which is of great significance to ship sailing and coastal structures bulding. It is critical to ensure the healthy development of ocean economy in South Sea. The main work of this paper is to get an easy and fine approach to model typhoon winds and waves on the basis of rather limited information, such as typhoon position, pressure drop and maximum wind speed. Parametric wind models based on empirical formulas and gradient wind equation were built to calculate the air pressure and velocity distribution in typhoon area. Fully spectrum wave models, WaveWatch III and MIKE 21-SW were used to stimulate the typhoon wave field on the seasurface. Through the combination of different wind and wave models, several numerical hindcast approaches were developed and applied to typhoon Ellen (1983), Sally (1996), Dujuan (2003) and Wipha (2007). The comparison between the hindcast results and the measured data validates the effectiveness and applicability of Jelesnianski wind model plus WaveWatch III wave model in Northwest Pacific.
