Abstract


There are always continuous studies on Chinese language appellation system. Using western linguistic theories as reference, Chinese scholars studied Chinese address forms from all its aspects and from multiple perspectives during recent years and has got great breakthrough. Referring to wide-ranging of previous research on modern Chinese relatives appellation terms, taking the generalization of Chinese relatives appellation terms in modern Chinese literature as research object, this article launches elaboration from the affecting factors and linguistic functions of generalization of modern Chinese relatives appellation terms, hoping to supplement and perfect the existing research results in this field by taking deep research and to give some guidance to daily use of relatives terms.Part I: Introduction. Definition and classification of addressing word, previous and current study of modern Chinese relative appellation terms.Part II: Implications of generalization of modern Chinese relative appellation terms.Part III: Important factors in affecting generalization of relative appellation terms.Chinese relatives appellation terms are of strong social meaning. There are a variety of relatives appellation terms and different way of choosing in a society. However, the certain term being chosen more decided by language environment. Once the relatives appellation terms system are considered together with the social characteristics and structure, such as class, gender, and age, they are no longer just the original pure symbols but stand for certain social meanings. Therefore, people tend to choose and adjust proper relatives appellation terms consciously or unconsciously to serve the needs of communication.Part IV: The Linguistic Function of Generalization of Relatives Appellation TermsFirst, the Function of GuidanceIn linguistics, appellation belongs to deictic terms, which is an important in linguistic research. Language social intercourse is a kind of conscious communication with certain purposes. People have to think about the addressing forms to each other. Relatives appellation terms could be used to recognise and indicate who are the donimant speakers and who are the informaition recievers. People use generalized relatives appellation terms to recognise the role and status of other people’s and defined the relation of ench other. Second, Function of CohesionTie of kinship is one of the most fundamental and unvarying relationships. It is the most original, fundemantal and stable element to build social cohesion. The relatives appellation terms generalization brought its emotional significance, the atittude and behavior towards kinship to nonkinship, therefore make the non-bloody connected people to become cohesive group. In this way, it can extented the intimacy within families to the society and make people without kinship into emotional and social groups. Third, Function as A Symbol of SocioculturalLanguage is not only a pure communication tool, but also a socio-culture phenomenon. Language comes together with culture. Generalization of relative appellation terms is a phenomenon of both language and culture with Chinese characteristics and strong national features which has close connection to social structure and cultrual tradition of Han nationality. People usually are bound by the psychology of traditional socio-culture of Han nationality in communication, such as how to deal with the seniors and juniors and how to deal with the family and branches. The relationships in culture is involved in gneralized relative appellation terms and accumulat into the social stantard meaning of expressions.Part V: Conclusion.
