Abstract

Viscosities of micelle systems formed by cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) and sodium salicylate (NaSal) in ethylene glycol (EG) and water, and the influencing factors on viscosities of micelle systems formed by quaternary ammonium Gemini surfactant were investigated. The rheological properties of micelle systems mixed by CTAC and Gemini surfactant were studied further. Rheological and drag reducing properties for micelle systems formed by chloro cinnamic acid and CTAC were investigated for the first time. Main conclusions were made as follows:1) The formation of micelle structure was closely related to concentration and proportion of CTAC and NaSal in EG and water. There was peak value for the relative viscosity of micelle at certain compositions. Viscoelastic micelle solution was formed by propyl (double octadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (18-3-18) dissolved in water at 45℃, relative viscosities of micelle solutions were increased with the increases of concentration of 18-3-18.Stable micelle systems may be formed by mixing 18-3-18, CTAC and NaSal. The micelle solution possessed good viscoelasticity, shear thinning property and thixotropy at appropriate compositions. The results showed that ethylene glycol may weaken aggregation for both CTAC and Gemini micelles, the relative viscosity of micelle solution decreased with the increase of the content of ethylene glycol.2) The new stable micelle systems were obtained by mixing CTAC with trans-3-chlorocinnamic acid and trans-4-chlorocinnamic acid respectively. The micelle systems possessed good viscoelasticity, shear thinning property and thixotropy. The trans-3-chlorocinnamic acid and trans-4-chlorocinnamic acid were proved as novel counterions for micelle formation. It was clarified the effect of trans-3-chlorocinnamic acid and trans-4-chlorocinnamic acid on the rheology of CTAC micelle solutions. The viscosity curves of micelle systems mentioned above vary with shear rates may be described by nonlinear co-rotational Jeffreys model, the simulated results were coincided with the experimental data.3) There were significant drag reducing effectiveness in turbulent flow for micelle system formed by CTAC and chlorocinnamic acid. The maximum drag reduction rates were about 70%in rough tube and 60%in smooth tube respectively for systems with the molar concentration ratio of 3-chlorocinnamic acid and 4-chlorocinnamic acid to CTAC was 10:5 and 10:8 respectively. These systems were proved to be novel drag reduction systems and could decrease pressures drops and increase flow rates significantly. The influence of 3-chlorocinnamic acid and 4-chlorocinnamic acid on drag reduction of micelle was obtained. The study in this paper provides good basis for the application of novel surfactant drag reduction systems.
