Abstract


This paper focuses on the study of regional settlement pattern language in Hetian district, Xinjiang province. Hetian district is an important economic and cultural crossroad connecting East and West as well as an important town in the south of the ancient Silk Road. The unique geographical location and humanistic environment determines the complexity of its culture. Meanwhile, the interaction and exchange among different religions and different cultures make the culture of this area more attractive. The special climate and soil have a huge influence on the local ecological environment, life style, the national psychology and customs. What’s more, it is associated most closely with the folk customs and is a part of the local folk culture.Based on the investigation, the author finds that it has a special feature in region in Hetian district. It also has a special ethnic culture and unique concept of life. The settlement pattern in this area is of great practice and function and it is combined with the local folk culture. Therefore, it is of great value and meaningful to conduct an investigation on the settlement pattern of this area.The author intends to explore the settlement pattern starting with the related concepts. First, the author briefly introduces the concept, type and characteristics of‘pattern’as well as the relationship and the requirements among pattern languages. Then, the author makes an inquiry into the natural geographical situation and historical and cultural origin. It is an important basis of further understanding and analyzing of the settlement pattern. In addition, based on the rural language, the author makes an analysis on the dominant and recessive pattern of the settlement in Hetian district, and tries to investigate the settlement location, the settlement layout, curtilage shape layout, curtilage shape space, structure, decoration and other major pattern language, which in turn, the results of this study can be applied to the construction and transformation of settlements. Moreover, the deep cultural connotation can be contributed to the development and inherited of new pattern language. Finally, the author expounds in detail the necessity of the settlement pattern language and its significance in contemporary town construction in Hetian district. Then the author illustrates the important reference value of the settlement pattern in contemporary town construction in Hetian district.
