Abstract

Attention function is important in cognition, which is be subjected to numerous scholars extensive concern. Both the neuroanatomy and neurotransmitter of attention networks have been researched, however, little is known about the effects of alcohol on attention networks. So, this study using the Attention Network Test (ANT) to investigate the effects of alcohol on the three networks with attention:Alerting, Orienting, and Executive Control. We also with the proposal to further reveal the influence of alcohol on the attention mechanism. The study was composed of two parts. In the first part of this study, we translated the questionnaire of Magdeburg Alcohol Tolerance Test into Chinese and investigated the reliability and validity of the Chinese version. In the second part, the subjects were selected by Chinese version of Magdeburg Alcohol Tolerance Test and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test. There was two experiments. In experiment 1, College students(n=28) with no significance difference in alcohol tolerance(MATT score=24~32) and no alcohol dependence were administered the attention network test during two test sesstions. The first session was a baseline assessment, followed by the second sesstion in which the participant received a dose of alcohol (Blood Alcohol Concentration,20mg/100ml), then completed the ANT. In experiment 2, subjects(n=12) was selected from the 28 college students in experiment one and the dose of alcohol they received was 40mg/100ml,.The results suggested that, first, the internal consistence a of Chinese version of Magdeburg Alcohol Tolerance Test was 0.81. Statistical factor analysis identified two factors termed "physical tolerance" and "functional tolerance". For both factors, each one comprised four items, alpha coefficients are 0.80 (for "physical tolerance") and 0.71 (for "functional toerance"). Second, Correlation analyses demonstrate no correlation between alerting, orienting, and conflict resolution. There were significant main effects of flanker type and of cue condition. There were no significance gender differences in attention function no matter drink or not. The dose of alocohol(20mg/100ml)had effect on alerting and the dose of alocohol(40mg/100ml) had effect on alerting and orienting. However, both of them didn’t impair individuals’ Executive Control. In conclusion, the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of MATT were good, it can be used to assess individuals’ alcohol tolerance. ANT produces reliable subject estimates of alerting, orienting and executive attention function. Alcohol impaired attention function. With the increase of alcohol, the effect on attention was greater.
