Abstract

The strategic management and IJV literatures assert that the creation of international joint ventures has been one of the most important trends in business management of the past quarter century. Meanwhile, how to acquire new knowledge and capabilities from partners through cooperation has become a hot topic during the last decade, especially in the context of transitional economies.Although the factors which determine the extent of the knowledge transfer from foreign partner to domestic partner are clearer than before, however, there is not enough empirical research to suggest that which specific factors contribute to the failure of learning. Therefore, this empirical study is conducted for the sake of seeking specific factors which may lead to the Chinese partners’ failure of learning. We use data collected from 12 Chinese-foreign joint ventures operating in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin etc. In order to gain an authentic and reliable data, we will establish an association between four variables and knowledge transfer, and a method of 1 to 7 scoring will be used. Ultimately, this dissertation reaches a conclusion that the transfer of tacit knowledge, particularly a lack of informal channels of communication and making little use of expatriates are the main factors contributing to the failure of knowledge transfer. The foreign partner’s teaching capability, domestic partner’s learning capability, the process of knowledge transfer and the application of new knowledge, all are thought to positively associated with the extent of knowledge transfer. The dissertation finds that the transfer of tacit knowledge, particularly a lack of informal channels of communication and making little use of expatriates are the main factors contributing to the failure of knowledge transfer. At last, this paper provides some suggestions to the managers and companies.
