In recent years, the smelling accidents occur frequently, that makes drinking water safety received great threat. Conventional water treatment process which is widely used in our country cannot remove the smelling substances effectively, and cannot treat these substances effectively when they are continuous high content or unexpected happened. Therefore it is necessary to study a new method to remove the odor material effectively. The study investigated and contrasted the removal effects of 2-methylisoborneol and geosmin by using potassium permanganate and powder activated carbon combined with traditional technology.Five common coagulation were used in this test including polymerization AlC13,aluminum sulfate,AlCl3,ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride, and we discussed the variety of combination process on geosmin and 2- methylisoborneol. The results show that the traditional technology cannot effectively remove geosmin and 2- methylisoborneol. The removal rate of geosmin is 31%, and the effluent concentration is 73.57ng/L;The removal rate of 2-methylisoborneol is 21%, and the effluent concentration is 71.62ng/L. The removal rate of geosmin by potassium permanganate preoxidation and conventional technology combination is 27.33%, and the effluent concentration is 55.42ng/L.The removal rate of 2- methylisoborneol is 10.32%,and the effluent concentration is 57.49ng/L. The removal rate of geosmin by powder activated carbon and conventional technology combination is 94.81%, and the effluent concentration is 3.94ng/L.The removal rate of 2- methylisoborneol is 94.37%, and the effluent concentration is 4.75ng/L. The removal effects by potassium permanganate and powder activated carbon with conventional technology combination are best. The removal rate of geosmin is more than 96%, and the effluent concentration is 3.45ng/L. The removal rate of 2-methylisoborneol is almost 100% when it is at low concentration, and the removal rate of 2-methylisoborneol is 95.64% when it is at high concentration. The effluent concentration is 6.58ng/L. All is lower than the national standard(GB5749-2006) 10ng/L, meeting the requirements.Based on the static test, we used small dynamic experiment system to simulate practical water treatment process, further optimizing and determining optimal processing parameters of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol removal rate. Also we test the effect in the actual water source water. The results shows that: Potassium permanganate、powder activated carbon and conventional technology combinations can effectively remove the geosmin and two2- methylisoborneol. The removal rate of geosmin is 92.59% ,and the effluent concentration reached for 6.16 ng/L;The removal rate of 2-methylisoborneol is 94.61%, and the effluent concentration is 4.6 ng/L; All is lower than the national standard 10ng/L, meeting the requirements.
