In the times great painters successively awppeared and Li Cheng was the most popular among them .When people were just talking about landscape painters ,all regarded LiCheng was ancient and then first. LiCheng began to learn from Jing Hao and Guan Tong who were two well-known artists,Then he innovated deeply and finally formed his unique natural style.On the theme and content, LiCheng’s cold forest ,tree branches, rock, pine, overlapping vapour are all extremely consummate and full of personality; refers to the painting techniques,they are characteristic of fine linen, with exquisiteink and linellae,on the composition of a picture, the flat-far artistic conception is characteristic of fresh wilderness, desolate scattered, quite emotional colors. The earlier stage of scholars who learned from LiCheng included XuDaoning, YanSu,ZhaiYuanshen, etc.XuDaoning was the most popular among them. LiCheng’s landscape painting contains much performance such as flat-far, hilly landscape which is different from the“behold a high mountain with awe”popular feature in northern landscape painting. XuDaoning learned from LiCheng,at the same time,he also developed LiCheng’s "brief" characteristics, became more bold and unconstrained, more and more fully and delightfully. But overall, XuDaoning’s landscape painting more or less copied too many things of LiCheng, so the ancients reviewed that imitating too much that no innovation. Other painter also imitated LiCheng too much, so, refers to the style-development , the contribution of LiCheng-genre landscape painting is not big. So, the earlier stage of the LiCheng-genre landscape painting is conservative and appear low. In the intermediate stage of Northern song dynasty, LiCheng-genre appeared a well-known figure, he was GuoXi. He began to learn LiCheng’s mode at the beginning,well,he had the encouragement of acquisition and innovation, he closed to nature, learned knowledges from nature, made friends with mountains and rivers. His landscape painting contents in cold forest, twigs, mountains, drain and other topics are much more rich than LiCheng’s.what ’s more,his vivid, ink are also far above LiCheng ’s style. The composition about high-far,reaching-far, flat-far, especially layout of the flat, specific sceneries are also more subtle, artistic conceptions are more solemn and quiet.
