Thanks to government’s favorable policy, China’s private learning institutions have made considerable progress in both size and quality. They have become the essential element of China’s higher education. However, there is still a great gap between private learning institutions in China and those in the developed countries. As students in private learning institutions are very special for bearing more psychological stress for study and work, the teaching in class alone cannot fit their needs satisfactorily. Those students must turn to their student advisors for their various demands. Actually, student advisors play a very important role in maintaining the regular teaching and learning procedure. It is no exaggeration to assume that they are the indispensable part of the teaching faculty. Student advisors spare no efforts in molding students’positive values and ideologies, establishing healthy world outlook and offering useful advice for students’future work.Thus, building a competent faculty of student advisors is the prerequisite for building students’ positive values and world outlooks. It determines whether students can grow healthily and thus can be seen as the guarantee of the sustainable development of the private learning institutions. Although the government has taken many measures to improve the student advisors’qualities, most of them are disqualified for their work for lack of a reliable system to guide their work. Many private learning institutions have put many thoughts into this issue, however, vey few of them have a clear picture of how to build a competent student advisor faculty. In order to tackle this important and imminent issue, I am resolved to suggest some tentative ideas about how to establish a plausible system for cultivating a competent student advisor faculty in this thesis. The significance of building such a system is also elucidated in the paper.The thesis covers the ensuing three parts:The first part investigates the current situation in China’s private learning institutions. Based on the investigation, the paper uncovers the importance of building a student advisor faculty. It has the final say whether the ideological education can be implemented and its due effect. Besides, it decides whether students can grow healthily in college and whether daily teaching can be successfully carried out.The second part concludes the achievements that have been made in China’s private learning institutions in recent ten years. The paper then points out that there are still many problems which hinder its healthy development, such as society’s general recognition of this post, the feeble system, school’s authorities and student advisors’poor qualities.The last part suggests some plausible solutions to this problem. Finally, the paper concludes that the issue will be satisfactorily addressed if a professional faculty of student advisors with scientific management, proper income and favorable political environment can be established.
