A class teacher is the organizer, educator and leader of a class, and is the backbone of students’ideological and political education and moral education. A class teacher has a unique status and plays a special role in promoting the development of quality in all aspects of students. Class teachers of vocational schools have their own characteristics. They bear more onerous tasks. In addition to completing the daily teaching and student management, they provide professional ethics and career guidance for students, which help students to set foot on the community smoothly, to step into their careers, and to become qualified professionals in modernization. The special educational model of secondary vocational schools and their students’characteristics and status determine the class teachers’ irreplaceable role in secondary vocational schools.However, the deployment of class teachers in vocational schools has become a widespread problem. According to the survey, many teachers in vocational schools do not want to be class teachers while some others are incapable. The author himself often witnesses various problems resulting in confusion, worry, resentment, and thus depression and even mental disorders, all of which inspire the author to think deeply about the puzzle of vocational school teachers and their existence.This thesis makes an overall analysis on the professional existence of vocational school class teachers and fully reflects their professional and occupational standards and quality. The research is based on the following four aspects:the class teacher’s material life, physical and mental health, work status and satisfaction, and professional development. After questionairing and interviewing 246 class teachers from six different vocational schools in Shanghai, the authors finds the following problems:economic pressure, limited entertainment, worrying physical and mental health conditions, lower social status, the majority of the class teachers having no say in school management, part of the class teachers’ dissatisfaction with their performance evaluation, relatively low professional levels. Through research, the author believes that the current existence of vocational school class teachers is caused by many factors, which includes lower social acceptance, school management system, student issues, heavy loads of work, and interpersonal discord. Finally, the author proposes strategies to improve the existence of class teachers:to attach greater importance to vocational education; to improve recognition of degrees; to enhance teacher professional development, guide and develop high-level needs of class teachers; to create a good organizational climate and virtuous working mechanism; to change concepts of education so as to enhance the well-being of class teachers.
