Objective To observe the distribution and change of endothelial nitric oxide synthase(eNOS)in periodontal tissue and understand the role of eNOS in orthodontic tooth movement .Methods 45 male SD rats were randomly divided into 9 groups. Orthodontic appliance was placed between the upper left first molar and the upper incisors of the rat. Immunohistochemistry and image analyses were performed at 0h, 3h, 6h, 12h, 24h and 3d, 5d, 7d, 14d after orthodontic force application. Right upper first molar in rats as control group without force. Results eNOS was weakly immunoreactive in normal periodontium. 3h after tooth movement, eNOS was increased, and reached the maximum after 5d. And expressions of eNOS was decreased in 7d and 14d.Conclusions eNOS participate in orthodontic periodontal tissue remodeling during tooth movement.
