Abstract

Chinese classical idioms is the treasure of Chinese literature. With a highly condensed form, it intends to provide readers with great space of association and say most in the fewest words. Idioms constitutes the core of Chinese traditional culture and serves as a key to the appreciation of the prevailing social conditions and writers’ personal feeling. Book of the Later Han, one of the four greatest historical books( including Shih Chi, Han Shu and San Goku Shi) in Chinese classical literature, bears high linguistic and historical value on corpora of Chinese idioms. This thesis intends to make a tentative study of 562 Chinese idioms quoted from Book of the Later Han and summarize their distinguishing features from the study.The thesis is composed of four chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the research motivation, significance and method of the thesis. Research on Chinese classical idioms is the key to the interpretation and appreciation of classical Chinese culture and ancient Chinese. Previous studies on idioms research focus on other historical books, paying little attention to Book of the Later Han. Therefore, the thesis provides a new perspective for idiom research, which is of high value both in theory and practice.Starting with the elaboration of idioms, Chapter Two probes its concepts, characteristics, collection standards and methodology. Based on the previous research fruits, the thesis summarizes a basic standard. This will lay the foundation for further discussion.Chapter Three, the key part of the thesis, explores clear classification of idioms, which is the precise and basis of research on Chinese classical idioms. There are three classification methods: First, classification by the source of idoms.The number of pioneering idioms in the Book of the Later Han is 241 ,and it accounts for 42.9 percent of the total. Among them, the number of the idiom which providing etymological is 116, and it accounts for 48.1 percent of the pioneering idioms; the number of Prototype idiom is 125, and it accounts for 51.9 percent of the pioneering idioms.The number of idioms from previous other works in the Book of the Later Han is 321, and it accounts for 57.1 percent of the total. In these idioms, the number of idioms from the former stereotyped idioms is 155, and it accounts for 48.3 percent of the idioms from other works ;The number of idioms which coming from previous works but finalizing the design in the Book of the Later Han is 69,and it accounts for 21.5 percent of the idioms from other works ; idioms that not initiated but used in the Book of the Later Han, finalized the design in later works .The number of these idioms is 97, and it accounts for 30.2 percent of the idioms from other works .Second, classification by the meaning of idioms.The classification is mainly from constitution and duplicity of significance.Third,classification by syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations of idioms. According to the study ,we can summarize several condensation way of idioms. Each classification is exemplified in the thesis.Chapter four is the core of the thesis. On the basis of the former chapters, this chapter concludes that idioms quoted from Book of the Later Han has four characteristics. Idioms of Book of the Later Han are valuable in rich quantity, subjective Individuality, variety and stability, and consistency with ancient Chinese.
