Abstract


As one of the most popular and influential Jewish American novelists with Saul Bellow and Bernard Malamud, Philip Roth has published nineteen novels, two short story collections, three nonfictions , and books of reviews, plus numerous other occasional pieces of writings. Among all his works, Operation Shylock: A Confession, The Deception, and The Facts are always classified into Roth’s autobiographical trilogy. Operation Shylock is the most controversial masterpiece, which has caught greater attention than any other. While much of the criticism on this novel has focused on its thematic study, there’s little on its form study. This thesis argues that Roth’s experiment of his postmodern writing features into this novel leads a heightened concern with the return of a Diaspora Jew. In order to demonstrate the postmodernity of the novel, the thesis intends to combine postmodern theory with this text, analyzing the postmodern characteristics of Operation Shylock from three aspects: fragmentation, indeterminacy, and parody, in order to rewrite the marginalized state of a Diaspora Jewish writer in American mainstream literature, and to present the return of the author Philip Roth as a Diaspora Jewish writer.My thesis is composed of three parts including introduction, the body part and conclusion. Firstly, the introduction part gives a concise survey of Philip Roth’s life, the content of Operation Shylock, a brief literary review on this fiction, and the postmodern traits in this fiction. Then, the body part is divided into three chapters,which mainly analyze postmodern writing features in Operation Shylock. Chapter one discusses fragmentation in Operation Shylock, which intends to expose that the identity of a Diaspora Jew is multi-faceted and rheologic. Chapter two through the discussion of indeterminacy aims to expose the uncertainty and doubt of a Diaspora Jewish identity. Chapter three is about parody in Operation Shylock, through the way of irony the author Philip Roth rewrites Diaspora Jewish images’state of being marginalized and silent, the conclusion part signifies the postmodern characteristics of the fiction. Moreover, it represents Philip Roth, as a Diaspora Jewish writer, whose further and deep exploration on Jewish problems from the marginality to the center.
