Abstract


Qi Song is a prestigious monk of the Northern Song Dynasty of China, whose thought about Buddhism has exerted a profound influence on people at that time and even later generations. Since his work was admitted into Tibet under imperial order, his influence is reaching far beyond that of other common monks. Filial piety is the foundation of Chinese traditional ethics and patriarchal society is based on filial piety; that is the consensus of Chinese and foreign scholars. Buddhist concept of filial piety is an important part of filial piety, and filial piety is the focus of the conflict between Confucianism and Buddhism as well as the integration points of the fusion of the two. In his book Filial Piety, Qi Song illustrates how Confucianism is consistent with Buddhism from the perspective of filial concept, in order to clear up people’s misunderstanding and query to Buddhism.This thesis contains three parts. The first chapter sorts out the concepts of "concept of filial piety" and offers an overview of it in both Confucianism and Buddhism. The second chapter discusses Qi Song’s "Concept of Filial Piety" and stresses the comparability of Qi’s "Concept of Filial Piety" with that of his predecessors, contemporaries and later generations in terms of the relevant ideas, highlighting the characteristics, historical influence of Qi’s Buddhist thought and thus highlights the personalized color of his Buddhist thought. In addition, by contrasting Qi’s Buddhist "Concept of Filial Piety" and the Confucian "Concept of Filial Piety, this chapter highlights the features of his Buddhist "Concept of Filial Piety", and tries to further explore the integration of Confucianism and Buddhism. The third chapter discusses characteristics and causes of "Concept of Filial Piety", mainly from the perspectives of time background, academic background and the individual, on which the author hopes to be innovative.
