Abstract


Protestant has made a speed development in China since the reform and opening-up policy. The development represents itself in all dimensions:in the amount, the number of Christians is increasing doubly; in the ecology, protestant spreads over not only rural areas but also urban areas; in the structure, besides the disadvantaged groups, people from higher stratum are also included. Among the Christian all over china, the ones that come from universities, the proportion of which is not so big but the absolute quantity is huge, have attracted the sociologists’attention.The theistic protestant stands on the opposite side of university education. Does the growing number of undergraduate Christian show the imperfection of university or prove the effect of protestant? It’s a problem of high value. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the undergraduate Christians make choices between university and protestant, so that we can distinguish the condition of the students and find ways to make sure that they grow up in a healthy way.Most undergraduate Christians do the worship in domestic churches. In consideration of the non-legal status of the domestic churches and the sensitive situation of the Christians, the author gives up methods such as questionnaire and group interview, and chooses participant observation and case study without revealing herself. After almost one year of co-living with the objects of the study, the author collects lots of objective materials and holds one rule to analyze them:take the domestic church the same as other functional organizations, instead of involving into the Christian doctrine. Under the direction of the rule, the author decides not to use religionary theory as tools but starts from the action of believing itself.In the action of believing, there are two essential factors:needs and motives. So the author will use American psychologist Abraham H. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to analyze the individual cases. As to the domestic church, it contains functions that meet students’ needs, so the author will use American sociologist Talcott Parsons’s structural functionalism to analyze the organization, including both the domestic church and the university.The most important traits of university students is the high level of education, which affects their characters, thoughts and needs in ways as follows:high level of education results in clear self-aware, strong needs to self-actualization and high degree of self-realization. University education mainly teaches students technology and skills but lacks in emotions and thoughts, while domestic churches do well in comfort individuals’feelings and interact with their thoughts. As a result, some students choose the latter to help self-actualize.The purpose of this thesis is not to create new theory but provide some suggestion to help the students grow up healthily, so the author excludes abstruse religionary theory and something like that, focuses on students’needs and motives, and get conclusions which have been explained partly in the paragraph above. Spiritual civilization should synchronize with material civilization, and the same with the development of university education, which should take the students’ needs of high hierarchy into consideration so that students of high quality can be cultivated.
