Abstract


When it comes to the research on weaponry of Western Zhou Dynasty, most of the previous study took the typological approach, with few scholars paying attention to a meticulous systemization of the instrumental characteristics of the different weapons. A comprehensive and profound knowledge of the characteristics will grant us a deeper understanding of those bronze weapons and also shed light on some relevant social issues of that period.This paper, therefore, through an investigation into the conditions of the bronze dagger-axe unearthed in Central Plains Area of Western Zhou Dynasty and a comparison among them in terms of the specific components of the tombs, the tombs and the regions they were found, attempts to give a general introduction to the characteristics of bronze dagger-axe of Central Plains Area in Western Zhou Dynasty.The paper is composed of 4 chapters. The first chapter lays the foundation for further research by categorizing the bronze dagger-axe and ranking the tombs of Western Zhou Dynasty based on previous study.Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 constitute the main body of the paper, which focus on a thorough investigation into the conditions of the bronze dagger-axe unearthed in Guanzhong Area and Henan, Shangxi, Hebei, Shandong according to the tomb and bronze dagger-axe information gathered in these areas. During the analysis into each specific area, the primary step is to look into the excavation condition of the bronze dagger-axe in each tomb, which is followed by a quantitative and qualitative comparison of bronze dagger-axe unearthed from tombs of different periods, different shapes and different ranks in aspects ranged from total number, the ratio compared to all the weapons, number in each tomb, types, the conditions of accompanied weapons, the specific location of the dagger-axe and also the age and the gender type of the owners, etc. After a further analysis of the comparison, this part ends with a summary of the conditions of the bronze dagger-axe unearthed in each specific area.Chapter 4 is mainly a summary of the instrumental characteristics of the bronze dagger-axes in Central Plain Area at the Western Zhou Dynasty based on the comparison between the previous two chapters, which is followed by a discussion concerning related subjects in reference to literatures of this field. Through the discussion, the paper concludes: there is no regular army in Western Zhou Dynasty, and as a conciliation policy over the descendents of Shang Dynasty, Western Zhou Dynasty enforced strict restrains on the use of bronze dagger-axe among them.
