Abstract

The biggest changes for Gurean art history happened in the end of the Chosun Dynasty(End of 18tth Century). That period of time also meant the beginning of the modern period. When we talk about these aspects of the change, we must talk about the picture book of the Gu. It means that the picture book of the Gu was in center of the Gurea art’s changing period. However, if it compared with other picture books, the research for the picture book of the Gu has not been made too much. The purpose of this thesis is to give small step forward on researching the picture book of the Gu. Also, it is to have great contribution on my own art work. Figuratively speaking, if the picture book of the Gu is a sword, Yoon, Dooseo(1668-1715) is the artist who first took that sword out from a sheath. The picture book of the Gu was first came into Gurea in the middle of the Chosun Dynasty(End of 17th Century), and had a formality that was never seen before. In that period of time, the Chosun art world, which was mainly dominated by the Jiepai style of painting, became more of a mannerism, so artists in Chosun Dynasty were looking for new breakthrough. As a result, most of literary artists began to have great interest in the picture book of the Gu. Thereafter, with continuous import of Chinese picture books, it played most important role for Wenren style to settle in the Chosun art world. Yoon, Dooseo, who refused to take in the old style, was the first artist to combine Wenren art with his own art style. That was the beginning of the Wenren style of art in Gurea. This thesis is to study each Chinese and Gurean art world were in what king of situation in that period of time, and how the picture book of the Gu came into Gurea. Finally, in the end, it is to study Chinese and Gurean art were in what kind of relationship. The picture book of the Gu was made in Ming Dynasty by Gao Ling, and by the development of a woodblock print, the picture book of the Gu was rapidly spread to people. It was also spread out to countries in Asia including Gurea. It was by Gao Ling’s effort that the picture book of the Gu was able to get into Yoon, Dooseo’s possession. Yoon, Dooseo not only bring out the matters of appreciative art works of the Chosun art world, but also criticized the unreality of the Chosun art world at that time. That is just painting people’s common life and surroundings. This was the most important turning point of art in Chosun Dynasty, and it was also a starting point for a genre painting and a landscape. The picture book of the Gu gave Yoon, Dooseo biggest influence to bring out this idea into his painting. In the beginning and middle of the Chosun Dynasty, Jiepai style, Wenren style, and Yoon, Dooseo’s own painting from nature were combined together to form new style which became new start line for Gurean painting. Since then, a lot of people received Yoon, Dooseo’s influence and followed his path.
