Abstract


Shi Lu is the most outstanding artist on twentieth century in Chinese art history, and also the most exploratory and creative artist in Chinese art circles. He is the leader of Chang’an Painting School. He formed a highly characteristic artistic style, creating many excellent works of great remarkable achievements, and made great contribution in the process of the development of Chinese painting. He influenced many artists who interested in creating new style of Chinese painting.The art life of Shi Lu experiences four times, 1939 -1949 is the first period, woodcut painting is the main creation style which use realistic popular paintings publicize the revolutionary life; 1950 -1959 is the second period, works are mainly portraits which depicting historical themes and working people of the old revolutionary base of Yan’an, use realistic style to paint the new era of revolutionary ideals. 1960 -1966 is the third period, he use color ink to depict the beauty of loess plateau, creating many distinctive "new Chinese paintings", his style is both romantic and realistic in this time; 1970 -1982 is the fourth period, due to the Cultural Revolution, Shi Lu had a harsh persecution, his health was not good and caused serious disease, he got schizophrenia, that made his artistic style have great changes. Strong inner conflict and great creativity made him created a large number of unique style arts.Shi Lu is a highly innovative artist, his life is devoted to new Chinese art career, his unique creative method, "The theory of spirit creating form" thinking and the related theoretical framework is very important for the development of Chinese painting, which made him become the most anti-traditional Chinese artist in twentieth century. This paper is studying the works of Shi Lu, use dialectical method to read historical material and empirical literature, to research his life and cultural background, social environment, painting techniques, art styles in different periods, and made comments about his representative works“Moving to Shan Bei”、 “Dongdu”and“Beauty god”in details. Finally we summarized his contribution to Chinese painting in 20th century.
